Bernat Klein

Serbian born designer Bernat Klein (1922–2014) emigrated to the UK in the post-war period and based his textile manufacturing business in the Scottish Borders (1951–1992). He sold couture fabrics to leading couturiers such as Chanel and Dior, gained recognition in Scandinavia and North America, and realised two important modernist buildings with architect Peter Womersley (1923–1993).

In a career spanning six decades, Bernat Klein found international success in the interrelated spheres of fine art, fashion, textile design, architecture, industrial design, and colour consultancy.

This 224-page fully illustrated book celebrates the life and work of Bernat Klein (1922–2014),and was published by the Bernat Klein Foundation to mark Klein’s centenary year in 2022.

The book by Mary Schoeser and Alison Harley sets out to reach audiences with a broad interest in modernist design as well as those with an academic or specialist practitioner’s eye. The international range of contributing authors embraces creative practitioners, curators, archivists, architects, photographers, academics, and collectors. Together they present a set of insights to Bernat Klein’s design concepts and lifelong commitment to creative practice, as well as his many collaborations as a textile designer and manufacturer located in the Scottish Borders.
