ILLUMINATE Architecture and Light

Twenty-five photographers capture the interplay between modernist architecture and light

08.03.24 - 27.04.24

Light transforms how we perceive and experience buildings. It can highlight or hide, soften or exaggerate. It is able to make places seem enchanting or unfamiliar.

In September 2023, the Leeds Modernist Society invited photographers to capture the interplay between modernist architecture and light on camera. The call went out to all the chapter cities of The Modernist family; Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Swansea, Liverpool, and of course, Leeds.

And capture it they did! We were blown away by the quality and quantity of entries. The near impossible task of judging fell to our expert panel - photographer Simon Phipps, RIBA Journal Editor Eleanor Young and Jack Hale of The Modernist. Take It Easy, a Leeds-based film lab, also awarded an analogue photography prize.

When the chosen images were first exhibited we were on the cusp of winter with the daylight dwindling. Now, showing them for a second time, we are on the edge of a new season and the light is increasing each day.

So, please enjoy this exhibition and accompanying catalogue ‘in a new light’.
